Bloomingfoods Co-op Market’s SNAP Double Dollars Program is ending Sunday after the depletion of a grant.
The program doubled the value of SNAP dollars in the store, effectively halving the cost of products for those on food assistance.
Lauren McCalister, a board member of the co-op, said the store is looking at ways to continue offering the program.
“We're thinking broadly, fundraising, directly, working with community partners and also looking for grants,” she said.
They still have a 20 percent discount on SNAP eligible foods through a program called Bloomingfoods For All that they are considering expanding.
The program launched on January 16, 2024, funded by a COVID-related grant from the Indiana Department of Health (IDOH). McCalister said they are encouraging IDOH to renew their grant to keep the program going.
McCalister said the program was important to those who used it.
“For our SNAP customers, this was a very big opportunity for them to show up in the space and be able to really utilize the nutrient local food that we offer at Bloomingfoods,” she said.
Bloomingfoods said 787 customers participated in SNAP Double Dollars.
